Union victory at Smithfield

Wow. When I was in grad school, Smithfield was the classic example of how to union-bust. Good for the workers there…it’s a hopeful start for them, though judging from the article, there’s still a lot of trust-building to be done between the black and Hispanic workers. (Same story at Hormel and IBP back in the 1990s; pretty much the same story at Armour in the 1900s. Meatpacking’s an industry where workforce segmentation, corporate culture and past pay practice, and the rurality of it combines to give owners outsize power in an under-employed region…)
