My Beautiful Wickedness

Too fried to be clever at the moment

I still love my summer class. These students are fun to be around, they have a lot of energy, they do the reading, they analyze, they talk…but I really don’t see how their heads are not popping right off their shoulders. I’m doing an entire semester’s class — five books (one written in the 17th century, two from the 18th century), three tests, just shy of forty hours of instruction — in 10 days. The class prep has been insane on my end, but I am imagining what it might be like to hear this all for the first time and try to make sense of it all.

I really am going to miss these guys.

My summer courses don’t start until a week from Monday and they will go on for eight weeks. Our summer enrollment is up one-third over last year and so I agreed to take on a second web course to help meet demand. Contrary to my earlier pessimism, I am going to be paid for the courses I’m covering for my colleague who is being sent to Turkey. Since she took on three courses, which I’ll need to cover for two weeks, I’m basically going to be teaching the equivalent of 2 and 3/4 courses.

All of which, combined with my tax refund and pocket money from Uncle Dubya, might be enough to pay for the roof I’ve discovered I need. So much for my summer vacation plans.
