My Beautiful Wickedness

Good choice, I think.

The NAACP has chosen Ben Jealous as their new president. He’s a young smart guy with both fundraising/foundation experience and substantial management chops. His work with Amnesty has been exemplary and I like his ability to think internationally about race and human rights — a hewing back to the original capacious vision of the organization that has gotten lost in the last twenty years or so. He’s part of a family of activists so he’s been brought up in the movement and groomed for this. I have to say, though, that I’m a little nervous about the way the meeting itself was conducted to get him to the helm — it’s hard for me to sort out whether this is an instance of “our voices aren’t being listened to” means “we’re pissed that our ultra-minority position didn’t carry” or “this guy isn’t churchy enough” or “we need someone older” or “he’s not black enough” or “need a Latino brother” or whatever. (I’ve heard all those objections…)

Good luck to you, man. You have some building to do.
