My Beautiful Wickedness

Well, shoot.

As a result of the big work blowout mentioned below, the only person in our program with a women’s studies degree has decided to quit and look for work elsewhere. She just can’t stand working at a place where one’s research, writing, and teaching is so little valued, where you sit in meetings and have to hear smart people question whether women have any place in the undergraduate curriculum, where there are serious high-level discussion about whether there’s even enough research to teach a whole class on women. Jesus god, people…this isn’t 1960. It’s almost as though the last fifty years of thinking and writing and researching about women just hasn’t happened on the campus of Brigadoon U.

I know she’s made the right call, but I’m still going to miss her. Anyone out there with an appetite for endless frustration and under-payment willing to sign on to teach a class in a hostile environment, a class that may get cancelled out from under you on short notice for lack of enrollment? Anyone?

I’m sorry to hear that. It sucks when good people get driven out by institutional blindness.
