My Beautiful Wickedness

Totally Tired.

I’m very proud of my daughter. She woke up at 5:30 am on Saturday to be ready for a full dressed rehearsal of her first dance at 8 am.  She danced six dances (pretty much one every two hours all day long), with some elaborate hair and makeup changes, and was complimentary to every person she met. She clapped enthusiastically for the other routines, performed splendidly in her own, and graciously accepted last-minute critiques that helped her do better than she ever had before.  You never saw a more surprised kid in her life than when she won the high-score in age-division trophy — as she told me, she was sure when she wasn’t third-place that she had just not won anything that time because “there were at least three other kids that were super-awesome.”  Well, she was pretty super-awesome too.

Final tally: Small Group Jazz — gold, high score in category, invited to Nationals.

Small Group Tap — high gold, high score in category, special judge’s award for choreography, special judge’s award for visual impact, invited to Nationals, invited to perform at the opening number

Large Group Hip-Hop – gold, invited to Nationals

Jazz Duo — gold, invited to Nationals

Tap Trio — gold, special judge’s performance award, invited to Nationals

Jazz Solo — high gold, high score in age category, invited to Nationals

I’m so pleased that her grandma got to come and see her do this.  We have been fussing at each other — frictions of two headstrong women who cannot communicate (what happens when two reformed “anxious pleasers” wind up together, one going deaf and prone to jumping to martyred conclusion, the other irritated that everything has to be so damn difficult…), but really, I do love that she cared enough to drive about a thousand miles to see Kid dance. Maybe after a little sleep we’ll all chill out.

I guess you’re going to Nationals! Congratulations to Kid and you for such an outstanding performance.

Yep, going to Nationals! If you happen to be in Wildwood, NJ in the third week of July…
