In rural Kentucky? In 1959?

I’m mortified by how much I vanilla-d this entry four years ago, but: http://www.slimcoincidence.com/blog/2003/08/my_first_drag_queens.php . That’s my recently departed grandpa on the far right.

They had moved to the near West Side of Cleveland by that point, although they were living in a racially mixed neighborhood (white West Virginians and Kentuckians living by blacks who had also moved up nawth — there’s a picture of my dad looking like a Nation brother in his dandy suit and bowtie that reflects the style of the W 55th experience). Some day I’ll tell you all about my family’s complicated (and wholly silenced) cultural heritage and this one will make (ironic) sense.
