Guess which excited me more?
Turning in my ten-pound tenure application with all the supporting documentation and 5 letters of support from all over the college etc…
Or
Getting 18 out of 20 students talking animatedly about conflicting ideas about citizenship in the post-Revolutionary period and leading them to the independent insight that economic inclusion (while a necessary precondition to sustaining “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” or “pursuit of property”) and limited legal inclusion is not the same as political representation and full civic inclusion…and that the changing conditions after the War for Independence meant that race was an even more important marker of liberty than it had been before the war, leading them to conclude that perhaps the things that white people believe comprise citizenship rights might have a racial
component even if they don’t come right out and say so.
Yeah! That’s what I’m talking about!
