My Beautiful Wickedness

Another good article on veterans of Iraq/Afghanistan

NYT is doing a good job this week of letting veterans speak about their experiences. The thing I think is significant about this piece is that it appears in the “Travel/Escapes” section, which is usually where they run their silly pieces about donkey riding in Belize. I hope that means that when the comfortable start feeling afflicted, troop withdrawal start happening…but it could also mean that the war is so omnipresent and the costs so acceptable that the Times can run war pieces anywhere and they won’t make a dent in their newspaper sales. As Newscoma keeps pointing out, the newspaper industry wants to sell papers — they mirror as well as shape. When pieces critical of a war migrate freely throughout the sections of a country’s most influential papers (editorials and comics, business, fashion, arts), isn’t that a clue that the population of a country doesn’t want the war?

True, but as we’ve seen…more and more and more…it’s never going to be about what the country wants.
